“Court Is In Session… Basketball Court That Is!”
On Sat. Feb. 12th PWHO sent three teams to compete at the Brandon Sprewer Basketball Classic tournament at Vincent High School in Milwaukee. This is an invitational tournament and the results are used to determine what division each team will be in at the District Tournament on Mar. 5th at the High School in Wilmot, WI. This was PWHO’s first time competing at the Brandon Sprewer Classic. The tournament was well organized and presented the opportunity for each team to play three games. The PWHO Knights, coached by Jay Bouchonville, fell short to the Waukesha A’s 11-19, the Elmbrook Pride 6-21, and to St. Coletta’s Bobcats 34-36. The PWHO Gladiators, coached by Jessica Roberts, defeated the New Berlin Panthers 18-10, the OZ Owls 28-12, and the NS Wildbunch 36-16. The PWHO Warriors, coached by Seth Bezanson, lost 18-20 to the OZ Condors, 44-13 to the NS Stingrays, and 30-18 to the Elmbrook Spirit. All the athletes competed admirably in both victory and defeat.
For the first time PWHO offered Basketball Skills competition for athletes. In Basketball Skills athletes compete in a dribbling, a passing, and a shooting drill, each with its own set of scoring criteria. Athletes compete against peers of a similar age, much like Track and Field, and the highest scores advance. Basketball Skills offers another means of competition for athletes who are unable to participate in Basketball team sport, due to limitations placed on roster size. Unfortunately the District Tournament for Basketball Skills on Feb. 20th was cancelled due to inclement weather. While coaches await word from the District office on how many athletes will be able to advance to the State competition for Basketball Skills, athletes in the Team competition continue to practice in preparation for their District Tournament on Mar. 5th. What has so far been a pretty great season looks to keep on rolling and end with a slam dunk!
